I specialize in abstract compositions
and colour harmony mosaics on any surface. The choice of colour and texture reflects my years in the Caribbean
and South Africa, while taking a closer look at modern art has influenced my abstract sculptural
mosaics.
I work with all kinds of materials like vitreous glass, shells, marbles,
ceramic findings, and tiles from all over the places, some Dutch Delfts blue and broken china/crockery from the car boot sales in the UK, and from the brockihauses and recycle centres in Switzerland; I use my own china or get some donated from friends. The pieces are usually uneven and/or textured, the variation in shape and texture mixed with the tiles/marbles and other
findings gives my work its own identity.
Lately I am experimenting with hand made ceramic ornaments which I am incorporating in
my mosaic.
My main purpose is to recycle as much as possible: it is the process of keeping
your eyes open for opportunities, seeing constant colour coordination in your daily live, that makes you being creative and
alive.
I was born, raised
and educated in the Netherlands and have a degree as an arts and crafts teacher as well as in recreation/art therapy.
While in Holland I held ‘textile paintings’
exhibitions in Amsterdam, The
Hague and Leidschendam.
Later I followed my husband to South Africa, where I lived for four years. Here I worked for a charity organisation giving sewing lessons to local women.
I returned to the Netherlands in 1992 where I wrote a sewing course which was successfully published by the ‘Hobby
Academy’ in Holland.
I also developed my own range of children’s clothing that was sold from my home in Breda.
In 1995 we moved to the Caribbean. I started
to make souvenirs not only based upon Dominican Art but also on Mexican and Guatemalan artwork.
These souvenirs I sold in local shops and markets.
In 1998 we moved to the UK
where I taught arts and crafts as an after school activity at the Dutch School in Woking.
In 2002 I started my workshops/commission work in mosaic for
adults and children in the UK.
In 2004 I published my first Children’s
Art Book ‘Wereldhandvaardigheid’, full of arts and craft ideas from around the world, in the Netherlands by Cantecleer
publishers.
In august 2004 we moved to Switzerland where I continued with my mosaic workshops/commission
work in English, German and Dutch. At the www.glascafe.ch I regularly teach a pique assiette
course.
